44th Annual Winter Hike

January 17, 2009

Continuous starts from 9-11 AMEnjoy winters splendor on this 6-mile trek from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave.  Layered clothing and good footwear recommended.  Refreshments are available at Cedar Falls for a donation.  A shuttle bus returns hikers to Old Man’s Cave.


Sweethearts Hike

February 14, 2009  

5-7 PM

Meet at the Ash Cave parking lot.  Take your sweetheart for a romantic stroll to Ash Cave in the soft light of dusk.  Afterwards, enjoy a cozy fire and refreshments.           


 

Maple Sugaring in the Hills March 7 & 8, 2009  12-4 PM

Join us at the Naturalist Cabin located behind the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center.  Savor the taste of the season as we boil down our local maple sap.  Discover the many methods used throughout history to make this tasty treat.  Free samples are available.

 


Wildflowers and Waterfalls Hike

Observe nature’s carpet of wildflowers and sparkling waterfalls in beautiful Hocking Hills.  Meet at the parking lot at Ash Cave.

Join with several area naturalist and birders along the Hocking Valley Birding Trail route for a variety of programs, hikes and events to celebrate the return of our avian friends.


 

Grandma Gatewood’s Fall Colors Hike

October 17, 2009      1:00 PM

Bring along a cool drink and celebrate the season’s colors.  Meet with the naturalist at the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center for a strenuous hike that spans roughly 6 miles of the Grandma Gatewood trail.   We will be traversing the section that runs from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls and back while enjoying the scenic beauty and cultural personality.  This hike does include several hills and steps and is not recommended for the easily winded individual.  (Approx. 3to4 hrs)

 


Haunted Hocking Weekend

October 30 & 31, 2009

Join with the Haunted Hocking “HIT” team as they search for the unexplained at Ash Cave or try your hand at Pumpkin decorating.  Registered campers and cabin guest can enjoy a hayride, a family fun spooky movie, site judging, and trick or treat at Old Man’s Cave campground.  Regular camping & cabin fees apply.


Christmas in Ash Cave

December 12, 2009 

5 – 7 PM

Step away from the hectic holiday season and come bundled for the weather while enjoying a lighted stroll back to Ash Cave.  Once you arrive at the cave warm with refreshments by an open fire.  Listen to or join with our carolers, have the kids visit with an old fashion Santa or help to decorate our Christmas tree for wildlife.

Hiking the Ohio State Parks and beyond at Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Old Man's Cave and Moonville Tunnel are just a few of the greatest places to hit the trails.

Ohio State Parks have loads of fun places to visit including their revamped visitor center and the many programs put on by the naturalist.  And there's also canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking and horseback riding close by. Maple Syrup Festival

You won't believe how many parks, wildlife areas and historical places there are to enjoy in the Hocking Hills Region! And each has its own unique personality. There's camping, hunting, swimming and loads of free outdoor fun for the family.

Most of the state parks in the area have at least a seasonal naturalist providing outdoor educational programs. You can plan a trip around a special event or just come and enjoy the programs each park offers.

Hocking Hills State Park-Home of Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave and Cedar Falls. There are monthly events and weekly naturalist programs for free family fun. There are over 25 miles of hiking trails, a campground, cottages and seasonal restaurant and gift shop.

Lake Logan- This park is not far from State Route 33 and has boat docks. Stocked with crappie and saugeye, it's touted as one of the best fishing spots in Ohio. There are places to picnic and a beach.

Hocking State Forest-99 acres of this forest have been set aside for rock climbing and rappelling.

Tar Hollow State Park-Camping, boating, fishing and hunting are Tar Hollow's claim to fame. A section of the Buckeye Trail passes through the area.

Tar Hollow State Forest-Ohio's third largest state forest with over 22 miles of trails and a 48 site horse camp.

Zaleski State Forest-Best known for its 23.5 acre backpacking trail and 10 mile day loop.

Lake Hope State Park-Just outside Zaleski, Ohio. Visitors to the park can still see a part of the Hope Iron Furnace and stroll past the famous "haunted" Moonville Tunnel. There are over 17 miles of trails, a campground and cottages too.

Lake Alma State Park-Right outside the bounds of Wellston, this park boasts a small lake with an bridge-accessible island.  Lake Alma was a small amusement park a hundred years ago complete with merry-go-round and a dance pavilion. Now, visitors to the park can fish, boat, swim at the beach or camp.

Burr Oak State Park

Near Glouster, Ohio, this park features a 60 room lodge, gift shop and dining.

Buckeye Furnace State Memorial-North of Wellston, this reconstructed charcoal-fired iron furnace run by the Ohio Historical Society even has the original stack, a general store and a couple trails.
